No, this has got nothing to do with any recent news; I'm too self-involved for that sort of thing. What I am talking about is a possibly good winter quarter. Out of the three quarters during a typical school year, winter quarter is the one that most students seem to suffer the most in - academically, psychologically, etc. Not only is the weather rather inclement, but grades and relationships also tend to be on downwards slopes.

Still, this quarter promises to be an exceptional winter quarter for me, mostly because, (a) I'm taking classes that are really interesting (more on this in a bit) and (b) after last quarter's ghastly aftermath, I am resolved to try to kick some ass this quarter. On the negative side, as I mentioned, the weather is rather nasty - it's extremely cold and rainy all the time and getting out of lovely central heating-equipped buildings is a real hassle because it involves putting on a muffler, a hat, a pair of gloves, a sweater and an overcoat.

Now, about those classes. First of all, I'm finally taking a class in Mac programming. Thankfully, it was offered this quarter and fit very neatly into my schedule. I have, for the what, past four years and three Mac OS X's, been trying to learn the Cocoa and Objective-C, and now it's finally happening! The problem with self-learning is that it requires a lot of motivation - some people have it, some people don't, and I'm obviously in the latter camp. What a class does is that it gives you two things: (a) a schedule, and (b) an impetus to stick to it, namely, your grade. Three weeks into the quarter and I already know much more about Cocoa than what I learnt in all my four years of futile attempts, such as how memory is managed in Objective-C, what exactly the Outlets and Targets do, etc. Soon, we will be learning concepts which have always eluded me such as Cocoa Bindings and all those "Core" things. And because it's a class I'm taking out of interest, I'm doing well on the assignments (at least, as of now), doing all the extra credit work, and more.

Another class that is a bit interesting is the Introduction to Computer Graphics, which is more of a requirement than a choice but is interesting nonetheless. The good thing about this class is that it not only looks into an aspect of programming that has heretofore been pretty much completely overlooked by me, but also teaches how to get started using the basics in the tools of the trade - i.e., graphics libraries such as OpenGL.

There are two other classes that I'm taking to fulfill requirements this quarter - one of them is an Electrical Engineering class (the only EE class CS majors have to take), whose potency I am yet to gauge because the first assignment is due on Monday and I have not yet started it; the second is a Science, Technology and Society class called "The Politics of Technical Expertise" which fulfills the "Technology in Society" requirement that all engineering majors have to do. Basically, the university feels engineers are too stuck up in their own fields and need to learn some fuzzy stuff; hence the class. Now, I had pretty much given up hope that such a class could ever be interesting, but I believe I might prove myself wrong by the end of the quarter. One of the great things about this class is that it is unexpectedly small - even for the instructor - having a sum total of four people. Also, for this class, all of us are required to do some reading the previous day and write up a "synthetic paragraph" about it, which is then to be posted on the class forum before midnight and reviewed by the professor the next morning. What I didn't expect was that the professor actually includes excerpts from our paragraphs in her PowerPoint slides the next day, and, believe me, as shallow as this gets, it's extremely gratifying to see yourself quoted on an official presentation by an official professor in an official class. The other great thing about this class is that it's really well-structured. Now, there was this class last quarter which was really fucked up because 50% of the entire grade was reliant upon this one final paper that was 10 pages long. Not so in this class. Every little thing, such as these synthetic paragraphs, count little by little towards the final grade, and, according to the professor, as long as one remains consistent throughout the quarter, there ought to be no surprises at the end. To me, that is a dream come true, because I was seriously shocked by my grades last quarter and do not want that sort of thing to happen again.

In addition to all the goodness I just mentioned, I feel I might be declaring a second major in Chinese. To say that I am interested in the subject would be very much an understatement - it's an obsession and I won't deny it. So, why not get a Bachelor of Arts in it if I can spare the time? I've met with the Advisor and found out that I can fit the classes required for the major into my Four Year Plan; what I have to figure out now is the choice between this "Dual Major" thing in which you get a B.A. + B.S., and a "B.A.S." degree because I don't know which one is more appropriate or more hardcore, assuming that I fulfill the requirements for both. Even though I'm blowing my own trumpet in saying this, I am actually quite a bit proud of how much progress I've made in learning Chinese (and subsequently about East Asian culture in general) since the beginning of last October when I could not utter a single syllable of the language or write a single character to now when I can easily converse with native speakers, read and understand more Chinese text than many native speakers I know, and still have seemingly undiminished curiosity towards learning more words, more characters, more grammar, and being able to understand faster and faster rates of speech.

Lastly, I really love my living situation this year. Last year, I have to say, was pretty fucking annoying - living quietly in a quiet dorm and not interacting with any of the other residents. This year, that situation has changed drastically. Although I've been cut off from a lot of my old friends, I've discovered an equal number of - if not more - new and amazing people, who are not only witty but with whom I share loads of common interests. I'm also seriously enjoying having a room that people like to come to simply to hang out (quite unlike last year). Not only that, but there are also loads and loads of Chinese speakers in my dorm who don't mind using the language. Happy Times!

इंडिया में एक बड़ी मुश्किल यह है कि जब विदेशी चीज़ें यहाँ लाकर बेचीं जातीं हैं तो उनके दाम भी वही विदेशी दाम होतें हैं, और इस ही लिए, अगर सौफ़्टवैर का उदाहरण लिया जाये तो मेरे ख्याल से तो पाईरसी का सबसे बड़ा कारण तो यह ही है कि जो माईक्रोसौफ़्ट विन्डोज़ अमरीका में दो सौ डॉलर में मिलेगी वह यहाँ उतने ही रुपयों में मिलेगी। भारत के लिए विदेशी कंप्यूटर कुछ ज़्यादा मेहेंगे थे, इसलिए शुरू से ही यहाँ ज़्यादातर कंप्यूटर "ब्रैन्डेड" नहीं "असेम्बल्ड" बिकते हैं, और हाँ असेम्बल्ड कंप्यूटरों में दिक्कतें थोड़ी ज़्यादा होतीं हैं, पर फिर कीमत भी तो है आधी। सोफ़्टवैर बनाने वाली कम्पनियों को यह अभी भी समझ में नहीं आया है कि पंद्रह हज़ार रूपए का कंप्यूटर खरीद कर कोई भी आठ हज़ार रूपए एक ऐसे सोफ्टवैर पर खर्च करके राज़ी नहीं होगा जिसे वह अपने किसी दोस्त से (या फिर उस असेम्बल्ड कंप्यूटर बनाने वाले से ही) आसानी से ले सकता है या तो मुफ़्त में या चंद रुपयों के लिए।

और यह बात फ़िल्मों की CD और DVD बेचने वाले लोगों को भी समझ में न आई, जो एक एक DVD चार चार सौ रूपए की बेचने की कोशिश में हैं। इसमें कोई आश्चर्य की बात नहीं है कि ज़्यादातर लोग इन चीजों की प्राप्ति काले बाज़ारों से करतें हैं, और जिनके पास इंटरनेट की सुविधा है, विशेष रुप से वे जिनके पास "ब्रॉडबैंड" इंटरनेट की सुविधा है, वे इंटरनेट के काले बाज़ारों (यानी कि "टॉरेन्ट" साइट्स) से इनकी प्राप्ति करतें हैं।

पर अभ शायद धीरे धीरे दो बातें हो रहीं हैं। एक तो यह कि भारत में हर रोज़ बहुराष्ट्रीय कम्पनियों की ताग़ाद बढ़ती जा रही है क्योंकि विदेशी कम्पनियों ने भी यह ठीक तौर से समझ लिया है कि अगर वे भारत के विशाल और बढ़ते हुए व््यापारी बाज़ार को देखा अनदेखा कर देंगे तो इसमें उनही की भूल होगी। सबसे ज़्यादा देखे जाने वाले ऐसे दो सेक्टर हैं गाड़ियों और मोबाइल फ़ोन के। दूसरी बात यह हो रही है कि भारतीय लोग खुद भी उद्यमकर्ता (आन्ट्रप्रनर) ज़्यादा बनने लगें हैं। और ऐसे काम का एक बहुत अच्छा उदाहरण है मोसरबेअर जिसका नाम सुनकर तो बिल्कुल भी हिन्दुस्तानी नहीं लगता पर जिसका, विकिपीडिया के मुताबिक, यहीं अपनी नई दिल्ली में जन्म हुआ था। अब यह राष्ट्र की सबसे बड़ी CD/DVD बनाने वाली कम्पनी है और दुनिया की दूसरी। और अब यह मोसरबेअर वाले और भी कुच्छ कमाल कर रहें हैं। आखिरकार किसी के भेजे में यह बात सज गई है कि कोई भी ४०० रूपए की एक फ़िल््म की DVD नहीं खरीदना चाहता। तो इन लोगों ने अब उन्हें पचास रूपए में बेचना शुरू कर दिया है। नयी फ़िल्मों में से अभी तो केवल एक ही है जिसे आप आज मोसरबेअर पर खरीद सकते हैं और वह है "जब वी मेट" जिसपर मैंने कल भरपूर टिप्पणी करी थी। परन्तु उनके पास मुग़ल-ए-आज़म और इस तरह की बहुत सी और पुरानी फ़िल्में भी उपलब्ध हैं। मोसरबेअर की अभी से ही कितनी लोकप्रियता बन चुकी है यह आज श्याम पता चला जब मैं DVD खरीदने एक दुकान पर पहुँचा और जितनी देर वहाँ था उतने में ही कम से कम पाँच छः लोग और अन्दर आ गए और सभी ने सबसे पहले यही पूछा कि मोसरबेअर वाली DVDs कहाँ हैं। (मेरा भी पहला सवाल यही था)

इससे अच्छा ठोस सबूत क्या चहिए यह साबित करने के लिए कि जब कुछ अच्छा बनेगा और सही दामों पर बिकेगा तो लोग कैसे नहीं खरीदेंगे।

पिछले जितनी भी बार मैं दिल्ली आया हूँ, हमेशा यह एक माल पुआ खाने की तमन्ना रहती थी, जो आखिरकार कल रात पूरी हो गई। हाँ, प्लान के मुताबिक सब कुच्छ एकदम परफ़ेक्ट तो नहीं हुआ क्योंकि हल्दीराम के पास रबड़ी खतम हो गई थी और वहाँ पर दस मिनट प्रतीक्षा करने की बात थी। रबड़ी के लिए इन्तेय्ज़ार या फिर रबड़ी को गोली मारकर घर लौटना? घर लौटना। घर पहुंचकर और एक कठिनाई सामने आई, और वह यह थी कि घर पर नानी ने बनाई हुई थी गाजर की खीर। अब दोनो चीज़ें - खीर और माल पुआ - एक के बाद एक खाईं जाएँ तो बहुत अति लगेगी, इसलिए मैंने यह निर्णय लिया कि माल पुए के साथ रबड़ी की तरह गाजर की खीर खाई जाए, और क्या बताऊँ, बहुत ही स्वादिष्ट कॉम्बिनेशन है यह यार! अगर माल पुआ और मेरी नानी की बनाई हुई गाजर की खीर कहीं मिले तो अवश्य खा के देखियेगा।

चीनियों से कहाँ कहाँ भागेंगे
खैर, यह तो रही माल पुए की बात, इसके अलावा, और क्या गल करनी है? हाँ, मेरा और चीनी लोगों से तो अब कुछ अटूट सा बन्धन बन गया है। वैसे तो मैने दिल्ली में सत्रह सालों में एक भी चीनी इंसान नहीं देखा होगा, मगर अब जब चीनी पढ़नी शुरू कर दी है तो चीनी लोग मेरे घर चाय पीने आने लगे हैं। ऐसा हुआ कि पिताजी का अस्पताल कोई महासम्मेलन (कॉन्फ़रेन्स) आयोजित कर रहा था और उसी चक्कर में उन्होनें शांघाई से दो नामी ग्रामी चीनी डॉक्टरों को आने का न्यौता दिया था। तो मेरे पिताजी एक श्याम आकर मुझसे कहतें हैं कि वे दो चीनियों को गोपाला के रस गुल्ले खिलाने जा रहे है और पूछ्तें हैं कि मुझे उनसे से मिलने की इच्छा है कि नहीं। अवश्य जाएंगे रस गुल्ले खिलाने भाई! फिर गए हम और मिले चीनियों से, बड़ा मज़ा आया क्योंकि उन्होंनें तो किसी सपने में भी नहीं सोचा था कि उनको भारत में कोई चीनी बोलने वाला व्यक्ति मिलेगा। उनसे थोड़ी देर बात करी तो पता चला कि उनकी भी अंग्रेजी कोई टॉप-क्लास नहीं थी और मुझे बड़ा मज़ा आया क्योंकि उन्होंनें न केवल मुझे कुच्छ शब्दों को चीनी से अंग्रेजी में बदलनें का अवसर दिया और अंग्रेजी के कुच्छ सवालात पूछे, और तो और, मुझे दो चीनी किताबें भी भेंट कर दीं। उन्हें यह जानकार भी बड़ी प्रसन्नता हुई कि मैं उनकी भाषा पढ़ लिख भी सकता था और उन्होंनें अपने मनोरंजन के लिए मुझसे कुच्छ शब्द पढ़वाए। बातों ही बातों में यह पता चला कि उनमें से एक का एक बेटा भी है और वे कह रहे थे कि उसकी पांचवी कक्षा की गणित उनकी खुद की गणित के मुक़ाबले में अभी से ही कितनी भयानक हो गई है। (वैसे तो मैंने इस शब्द को "भयानक" लिखा है पर यह असलियत में चीनी का एक ऐसा अनोखा शब्द है जिसकी किसी और भाषा में ठीक तरह से बदलाव नहीं किया जा सकता है। मूल चीनी में इसे "लीहाई" (厉害) बोला जाता है, और इसका अंग्रेजी में सबसे अच्छा करण "फ़ौरमिडेबल" है। यह शब्द दोनों अच्छी और बुरी खूबियों का वर्णन करने के लिए इस्तेमाल होता है।)

जब वी मेट
सबसे पहले तो इस पिक्चर के नाम का हिन्दी-करण थोड़ा सा... हाँ, मुझे लगता है आप स्वयं देख सकतें हैं इसमें क्या खासियत है। नाम के अलावा, मैंने पिक्चर इसलिए देखी क्योंकि बहुत लोगों का कहना था कि अच्छी फ़िल्म है और आमतौर की फ़िल्मों से थोड़ी हट के है। कि यह फ़िल्म अच्छी बनी है, इस दावे पर मैं कोई आपत्ति नहीं जताऊंगा, परन्तु मुझे लोगों की चर्चा सुनकर ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ था कि यह फ़िल्म कुच्छ अलग होगी और फ़िल्म के इस दावे को मैं दुर्भाग्य से अपनी सहमती नहीं दे सकता। हाँ, गाने अच्छे थे, कलाकारी भी अच्छी थी, मगर ऐसी कोई बात नहीं हुई जिसको मैं देखकर यह कह सकूं कि हाँ इस फ़िल्म की कहानी तो सच में सर्व श्रेष्ठ है। हाँ, अगर फ़िल्म देखने के समय मन में ऐसी कोई अपेक्षा न होती तो वह थोड़ी और पसंद आती, मगर फ़िल्म तो मेरे ख्याल से अच्छी बनी है, मनोरंजक है और बहुत देखने लायक है। कुच्छ गाने भी बहुत अच्छे हैं जैसे "आओ मिलो चलो", "तुम से ही" और "ये इश्क़ हाए"।

२००८
वैसे साल २००८ तो आ गया है, तो अब कुछ हफ़्तों के लिए ग़लत तारीख़ जगह जगह लिखनी ही पड़ेगी, और कुछ नव वर्ष के दृढ़ निश्चय बनाने होंगे। मेरी बात सुनिए तो ज़्यादा भारी भरकम प्लान न बनाईयेगा क्योंकि इनकी पूरे होने की संभावना थोड़ी कम ही रहती है। (यह ऐतिहासिक रुप से साबित की हो चुकी सच्चाई है।)
